Undertale painting

My first undertale painting. I'll probably do some more some other time. I'm kind of starting to get the hang of it on colors for skin and some what for hair, but I've got tons of improvement to do if i'll do clothes.

Link behind a pillar

I was not satisfied at all with this one. Here I got to test out my painting skills without trying to improve anything. I can see that I've gotten better at colouring faces and hair. But I'm still having problems with actually making poses, hands, legs, arms and so on. Even if I'm not satesfied, i'm happy to see that I've improved over the last past weeks. By only focusing on improving my colouring skills, i've been able to control shadows better. Earlier i never saturated the shadows, but lately i've been putting some saturation on them and I can see improvement. I'm looking forward to improve some more in the future.
PS: Did I mention that I'm not happy at all with this one?

Contrast study

I've always wanted to try make a picture where the contrast is pretty strong. I think I should aim for this style in the future. Although the coloring was very difficult because sometimes I'm not sure to use saturated colors or desurated colors. Anyhow, this style would be very good along with custom made brushes! I'm looking forward to do this style again but with other types of brushes.

Coloring improvement attempt

Today (and also lately) I've been only focusing on improving my coloring. I'm not happy with the "line art" from this picture. I tried to do it as fast as possible to spend more time on coloring. This took me around  1 hour and 20 minutes. The lineart-sketch took me around 20 minutes, but I tried to go for 1 hour on the picture...but it wen't over abit. Anyhow, it's no excuse because I should be able to do the line art better. However, there's two people in the picture so the time to create this doubles. I'm not that quite happy with the coloring, but I feel that i'm able to have more control than before. It's interessting how saturated skins usually are.  For some strange reason the shadows on the skin are red and saturated. Also something I've been taking notice of lately is that the make up people use affect the colouring too. It's like I have to adapt to the make up people used.
When it comes to the guy's eyes, i'm note sure what I could have done more to give them more dimension. I painted his eyes incorrectly, it's like they're flat eyes but the human eye is more round. I don't know if i will blame my colouring skills on that or my lineart skills. Maybe both. I feel that I have more control of women's hair nowdays, but men's hair is still a problem for me.

Bromance

I was quite happy with guy on the left, but I don't know why I feel like I painted the right guy so incorrectly. I totaly need constructive critism on this one.

40 min practice.

Here I tried to see how much I could do in 40 minutes. I really don't like to paint more than 1 hour.

This was some practice I did for today. I don't know why I couldn't get  the right skin color. Oh well.

Skin idea for vulcan Taliyah

Here is an attempt for a skin idea of Taliyah. I think it's very hard to do skins or concept art ideas because it requires so much creativity and inspiration. Also I wasn't sure if I should have put on an line art or not, but perhaps the contrast between the colors are enough. I don't know.

My biggest improvement

Today I am very happy. For the first time I have actually improved on my colouring all thanks to watching this video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQfF-P70V2Q .
If I start to color the picture by zooming out a lot so I'll be painting on a canvas that is extremly small, then i'll be able to see what colors matches the colors of the reference. Also that the reference gets zoomed out by alot. I got advice to think more about values more than colors and saturation, this improved me a lot.

Kindred skin design idea

Here is a picture I made. I tried to sketch it out first and then add color to it. I didn't really think about any technique while I was doing it.

Focusing only on improving my hair progress

These two above were my first attempt on hair in a long time. I could tell that I had no clue how to deal with hair.

The pictures above were the ones where I tried my best to only focus on hair. I used these youtube tutorials to learn how to do hair more properly:
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDIuwfkRoeo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fbRQcO4UKY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DrCvx2-NVg

My way of improving was to try to do the same thing that the "teacher" was doing. I tried to use my eyes to determine the colors instead of color picker. Usually I used to take the color picker and colorpick the color on the picture I was painting from. Take note that these pictures have a reference. I didn't do them from scratch. In other words, these people are real people. Anyhow, so I tried to do the same thing as them. I took notice of the mistakes I did when I tried to copy their next step on making the picture. I figured out what I should have done after making one of those mistakes (because I can see when they do instead in the video). This helped me alot I think. I tried to ignore everything else and only focusing on improving on the hair. You can clearly see the horrible coloring and bad placed lines/eyes/mouth/ears etc. But that's not an excuse, I'm pretty bad at coloring too.

About the two pictures above. After practicing alot on hair I took notice of how the hair usually is formed and that they have some kind of specular light. I took notice that it's good to start with a dark color and work yourself up to the highlights and lighter colors on the hair. I think this is the key to make sure that there is depth on the hair and show thatthere are alot of hairs on the head. It's hard in my opinion to do that if you start of coloring the hair with a very light color.

The pictures above gave me more confident now on making hair. It's not good yet, but it's a major improvement from when I started. I don't know now if I should keep on focusing on improving the hair or if I should try to improve the skin coloring. I forgot to mention that on the 3 pictures above I also tried to make better skin color. I think skin color is extremly hard. I tried this video  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DrCvx2-NVg to learn how to color skin, but I only learned how to color people with darker skin. I tried to make a lighter skin on the girl above, but somehow I feel that I've failed miserably because her skin looks so ...dead. I don't know what I should do to make it better. I'll see if I'll continue on focusing on the skin color.

This picture above is a speedpainting I did on 30 minutes. It was very hard to do it. I see that I haven't improved in 10 years. This sucks.
